Rescue in Progress

Meet the Seinfeld Herd!

Jerry, George, Kramer, & Elaine. Four minis saved from an auction in Montana, found skinny, covered in lice and bugs, and with feet that hadn’t been trimmed in months. One is even still a stud! Our partner Ariel Fox is working on their rehabilitation day in, and day out, since Zuma’s rescued these precious lives in February.

Now, they are slowly beginning to thrive. And it is all thanks to our generous donors and sponsors! Thanks to several private donations from Zuma’s family and friends. Thanks to Horse Plus Humane Society for the $2000 grant to cover their auction fees. Thanks to Colorado Unwanted Horse Alliance for the $150 grant in support of their initial vet visit. Together, we have raised $5500 toward this little herd.

We are excited to welcome these four cuties to Zuma’s sanctuary in Littleton, CO on April 13th! They will continue their rehabilitation, gaining weight and working on social skills, with the goals of adding them into our mental health program as beloved therapy partners. They will need sponsors to help provide the additional farrier and veterinary care needed to further their rehabilitation.

Help Zuma’s ensure that these minis’ future is bright!

And our newest rescue operation from this morning!

Early this morning, our executive director and founder Jodi was made aware of an animal cruelty and neglect case coming out of Billings, MT. She immediately knew that we had to help, without question.

A man was charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty after several dogs were found shot on his property, and many more live ones were removed. What struck Zuma’s about this story is that a small herd of horses and a flock of sheep were left behind after law enforcement removed the dogs. They had access to water, but no food, and were all in very poor condition. Montana, like Colorado and most of the US, declares horses as livestock, and not companion animals, something that Zuma’s is aiming to change. You can read the entire story here.

The suspect’s mother turned the horses over to an auction lot, and we immediately stepped in. Zuma’s was honored to partner with 1 Horse At A Time Draft Rescue, a local MT equine rehabilitation center, to save these chestnut beauties from an auction lot this morning.

One horse went to a private home right away, and the others will be remaining at 1 Horse At A Time for rehab and decompression. By working together, Zuma’s and 1 Horse At a Time were able to save four lives that would have otherwise been lost.

Between the auction fees, the estimated costs of gelding the two stallions, and initial veterinary checks, our total costs are just over $3,000. Consider making the gift of a donation today to support Zuma’s life-saving rescue efforts!
