Affordable Veterinary Care
As horse guardians, we have all stood with our beloved horses needing medical care without the necessary funds. You have to become the deciding factor, making literal life and death decisions, and it’s heartwrenching.
When did colic, which can oftentimes be managed with IV fluids and pain medication, cost a minimum of $3,000 and up to $10,000 for just medical management, no surgery? How do people navigate these life-or-death decisions? How do you live with saying no to the care needed to save your horse’s life?
Another tragedy is literal access to large animal veterinarians; there are fewer and fewer options, creating a supply and demand rate structure and leaving far too many large animals without veterinary care. Our horses deserve better!
The lack of access and the extreme costs are leading people away from getting the horse they love, knowing that access to affordable care will challenge them. This is leaving more horses without homes and overcrowding in large animal rescues and sanctuaries.
Zuma’s began the quest to create a non-profit, large animal hospital in 2020, but Covid halted the capital campaign. Today, in 2025, we have reinvested our focus on creating an affordable place for horse lovers to seek both care and preventative education for their beloved horses. We feel that a nonprofit/cooperative setting would lower costs and allow horse guardians to help offset the cost of care by lending a hand in the clinic.
We are seeking funding and members to join us in this venture. If you would like to partner with Zuma’s on this venture please contact Jodi.
